The West Midlands Region hosted another successful Foran Equine RC70 / RC80 Team Show Jumping Championship qualifier on Sunday, 11th May 2025, at the beautiful Roscrea Equestrian Centre. Under clear blue skies and with ideal ground conditions, the event saw a fantastic turnout and vibrant atmosphere for what is only the second year of this growing competition. Four teams from three clubs came forward to contest the title in a friendly yet competitive spirit.
Sarsfield Riding Club’s team of Aoife Neville (Gooseberry Hill Hugo), Alice Reynolds (Lassban Diamond Imp), Kerry O’Sullivan (Oh My Daisy) and Mairead Leahy (Helluvaguy) delivered three clear rounds, but were unlucky overall on the day despite strong performances.
Mill Road Riding Club’s team, featuring Sarah O’Dwyer (Rossdarragh Sarah), Ellen McWey (Ballintubber Danu), and Alice Fitzgerald (Loaded), were just caught out by the clock. Of particular note was Alice and her retrained racehorse, Loaded, who recently clinched the RC80 West Midlands Spring Show Jumping League title—showcasing the potential of ex-racehorses in club competition.
Anvil Riding Club entered two teams. The first, with Damien McLoughlin (Banagher Rosie), Shauna Larkin (Lickthestamp), and Wesley Hayes(The Chapel Field) (both Shauna and Wesley also riding retrained racehorses), set the early tone. Damien delivered the first clear round of the competition aboard his promising young mare Banagher Rosie.
But it was Anvil’s second team—Dermot Brislane (Brisogues Sybil), Anne Grace (Roanwood Hanora’s Dream), and Sharon Reams (Clough Ruas Close Shave)—who emerged as the dominant force, finishing their first round on a team total of just four faults, a lead that proved too strong for the others. Notably, Dermot Brislane was the only rider to secure a
double clear round throughout the day.
The course, designed by Tony Ennis, was widely praised for being inviting and fair, with a layout that tested skill while encouraging confident riding.
Spectators enjoyed a relaxed and upbeat event, with plenty of support ringside, especially heartening for a new competition in only its second year. The growth in participation and
enthusiasm suggests a bright future.
The winning Anvil team now progresses to represent the region at the upcoming Riding Club Festival in the RC70 & RC80 Team Jumping Championships. We wish them the very best of
luck!
A special thank you to Foran Equine for their generous sponsorship, and to all riders, supporters, and volunteers who made the day a resounding success.
