Earl’s Well Riding Club, which is based in Ballinhassig, Co. Cork, won the Horseware Team Show Jumping Championship qualifier for the South West region for the second year in a row last Sunday.
Ten teams, representing five clubs, went to the post at Maryville Stables with three from Highland Lodge, two each from Earl Well, Kerry and North Cork and one from Knocknamana Country.
After the first round six teams were out in front on zero penalties including Highland Lodge, Kerry, Knocknamana Country, North Cork and two teams representing the hosts Earl’s Well.
Another Highland Lodge and Kerry team had 4 penalties while another from North Cork was on 8 ahead of Highland Lodge who were trailing on 12.
Alan Molans nine fence track with ten jumping efforts, reduced the leading pack to just two teams when Knocknamana Country dropped out of contention while the Kerry team on 4 penalties moved up to sixth place after they picked up another 4 to finish on a total of 8. North Cork also finished on 8 but their faster combined time kept them ahead in fifth.

Highland Lodge, captained by Karen Hourican, and the Earl’s Well team captained by Rozalino Briggs claimed the third and fourth place ribbons on a tally of 4 penalties each while this left Kerry and Earl’s Well to battle it out for the top spot.
The Kerry captain, Katy Scott, was first to take on the shortened track but was unfortunate to jump a wrong fence on Paeona Du Mesnil to allow Fiona Fitton an easy route to victory. The Earl’s Well captain produced her third clear round on the day in a time of 53.38 on Ballinhassig Prince to secure a golden ticket for the club at the final in August.
The Earl’s Well team of Chloe Foley (IFES Limited Edition), Kate O Shea (Send Me On), Lauryn Waugh (Creevagh Fermiro and Fiona Fitton (Ballinhassig Prince) put in a near faultess display to win the qualifier while the Kerry team of Kate Logan (West Bay), Noelle Kirby (My Cremlin), Pat Sheehan (LVS Buzz Lightyear) and Katy Scott (Paeona Du Mesnil) will have a second chance to qualify for the final at the Riding Clubs Festival next month.
